Filmed in color by combat cameramen of the 3rd Marine Amphibious Corps and the 1st and 6th Marine Divisions, this fierce battle to capture an island air base just 340 miles from the Japanese mainland results in one of the highest death counts of any WWII campaign. The Allies suffer more than 50,000 casualties; while the Japanese lose over 100,000 troops. More than 100,000 islanders are killed, wounded or commit suicide.
The battle is the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific war. The invasion is supported by army, navy, and tactical air forces. The Japanese launch seven major kamikaze attacks using 15,000 planes packed with explosives specific to each Navy aircraft carrier target.
